Is the “Zero Accident” Approach Realistic?

The “Zero Accident” approach has become one of the most widely discussed concepts in occupational health and safety in recent years. Many organizations adopt it as a strategic goal and align their operations toward creating an incident-free workplace. However, an important question arises: is achieving zero accidents truly realistic, or is it simply an idealistic vision?

In practice, “Zero Accident” is less a measurable outcome and more a mindset. It reflects an organization’s commitment to prioritizing safety and its belief that all incidents are preventable. From this perspective, the objective is not only to reduce the number of accidents but also to strengthen a proactive safety culture. When both employees and leadership integrate safe behavior into daily operations, the likelihood of incidents decreases significantly.

Nevertheless, maintaining a consistent zero-accident record may not always be feasible in real-world conditions. Human factors, technical failures, and unforeseen circumstances can never be completely eliminated. For this reason, many experts view the “Zero Accident” concept not as an absolute target, but as a motivational and guiding principle.

At this point, the organization’s approach to risk management becomes critical. The ISO 45001 standard plays a key role by requiring organizations to systematically identify, assess, and control risks and hazards. The focus is not merely on reacting to incidents, but on proactively minimizing their likelihood.

Successful implementation of the “Zero Accident” philosophy depends on strong leadership commitment, active employee participation, continuous training, and effective monitoring systems. A true safety culture is not built solely on procedures, but on consistent behaviors. When employees genuinely perceive safety as a core value, meaningful and sustainable change occurs.

In conclusion, while achieving absolute zero accidents may not always be realistic, the approach itself drives organizations toward safer, more responsible operations. Ultimately, it contributes to protecting human life while enhancing long-term business resilience and sustainability.
